Delta of Orinoco - Tour (3 days / 2 nights)

The Orinoco river is with 2140 km one of the longest rivers of South America. Before the river is flowing into the Atlantic it reaches a surface of 40.000 km2 in the Delta of Orinoco. The Delta is an immense labyrinth of rivers and small side arms. This world wide unique ecological system is the home for thousands of different animals and plants and as well the home of the “Warao” Indians (“the ones who are living on boats”). Our tour is going to be in the southern part of the Delta, far away from other tourists. We want to show you this wet land paradise in its original form.

Day 1: We will meet in the morning in Puerto Ordaz or San Felix and go to Piacoa from where our tour will start. It is also possible to arrive one day earlier. After having lunch and putting our staff in our rooms we start at about 2 p.m. our first trip through the Delta. We drive on the rivers “Tipirua” and “Piacoa” to get to know the Delta and see colourful birds, river dolphins and howler monkeys. During our tour we will get in contact with the “Warao” Indians, who live since generations from fishing and hunting. In the early evening we return to the posada.

Day 2: After breakfast we start the tour on the rivers „Sacoroco“ and „Tulipane“ to reach the lagoon „Santa Catalina“. On our way we will see egrets, parrots, humming birds, bitterns, kingfishers and red flamingos. If we are lucky, we will see as well iguanas, otters, turtles, snakes and caimans. Depending on the water level we can take a bath on a nice sand beach. At noon time we look for a nice place to have pick-nick. Our guide “Roger” knows the Delta very well and is going to explain us everything about the flora and fauna and is going to tell us as well things about the culture and history of the region. In the late afternoon we start our way back to the camp.

Day 3: Today we will try our luck with fishing piranhas. Another highlight of the day is the driver on the “Guacara” in the “Sierra Imataca”. In this region are a lot of toucans. Maybe we have the possibility to see one of the seldom orinoco crocodiles and anaconda. For lunch we go back to the camp and then we have to say good bye to the breathtaking landscape of the Delta of Orinoco. We will be back at about 3 p.m. in Puerto Ordaz.
